Reviving Orestes Brownson’s Profound Insights
What Aquinas was to Aristotle, Orestes Brownson was to America’s founding.
Born in rural Vermont in 1803, Brownson experienced America from the inside and commented on all the major issues of the Nineteenth Century until his death in 1876. His insights into the American form of self-government, particularly during the Civil War, are especially timely now as we approach the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.
Over the next year or two, we intend to:
- Build a library of every essay written by Brownson in searchable text,
- Continue to expand our YouTube channel from the material contributed by American Family Project,
- Create short videos from Orestes Brownson and the Mission of America for distribution on social media,
- Aggregate a bibliography of all the best Brownson scholarship,
- Conduct the Orestes Brownson Essay Contest for undergraduates and
- Hold at least one annual conference on Brownson’s insights.
